Can you describe to someone what body awareness is without googling it first?
Body awareness is the knowledge of our different body parts, the personal awareness, conscious experience and internalization thereof. Body concept is the knowledge of WHAT body parts are. Body scheme is the internal awareness of WHERE body parts are in relation to each other. This internal awareness develops in the brain during the first 9-12 weeks of pregnancy and is stimulated by sensations received through activities involving our body’s receptors, such as our joints.
Problems with the development of the above terms can influence a child’s body image (The concept of self-involving emotions and internal feelings which is influenced by parents and peers.) Lack of body scheme will influence a child’s ability to execute gross motor movements effectively for example throwing, catching or kicking a ball.
Today I encourage you to bring educational awareness to your child’s body scheme and body awareness. Here is a fun way how: “Simon says point to your nose” “Simon says stand on one leg”, “Simon says count your toes”.
Let me know if you find other fun ways to increase body awareness in a positive and educational way.
